BEAT WEEK 2 CHALLENGE:
Comparing and evaluating cultural differences
Based on the 6-Ds evaluation.
Australia vs Vietnam
This week’s challenge part 1 is about pointing out the differences among cultures by using Hofstede Insight’ 6-Ds.
I am going to show you very clearly how influential cultures is, especially in ads execution, and content.
But first and foremost, let us have a look at those ads.
Here are the links:
- Australian ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtZV7NZ4nC4
- Vietnamese ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7lTfPYeW94
As family ads, where we can recognize the culture of a country easily. There is a big contrast between Australian and Vietnamese ad as you can see, how people treat each other differently.

In term of Aussie’s ad, peoples’ behaviours are just generous, free and natural, the tone is happy and funny. Its time for Hofstede 6-Ds to give us some deeper angles.
- Individualism (90/100): Australian got really impressive marks on this column, 90, which illustrates Aussies are pretty strong in personality and independent in life-style. In total, the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members (Hofstede insights, n.d.).
- Indulgence (71/100): They are willing to be straight forward and assessing problem-solving mindset (there are solutions to each situation), they are simply doing what they want to enjoy life and have fun and this is emphasized in most of the scenes (Hofstede insights, n.d.).
In contrast to the Australian ad, this Vietnamese ad has an extreme Asian cultural colour. An energy drink advertisement with an image of a man carrying the whole family on his shoulder, this might implicits that individualism is really a matter.

- Individualism: (20/100) “everyone takes responsibility for fellow members of their group” and everyone happy about that, smiles on faces, that’s really a creepy smile no matter how tough the man is bearing. This must be an intense, clinic and very conservative culture in Vietnam (Hofstede insights, n.d.).
- Indulgence: (35/100) smiling from start to end, family members must be very calm, and the rest meaning of those smiles might about Asian culture that always keep everything positive, avoid being frank and act to be polite at all cost.
